The Riverside Inn, Aymestrey

The Riverside Inn, Aymestrey
Deep in the heart of the Herefordshire countryside.

Deep in the heart of the Herefordshire countryside on the southern edge of the Mortimer Forest, the Riverside Inn nestles cosily at the point where the western arm of the Roman Watling Street crosses the River Lugg. Rich in original features and an atmosphere created by over 300 years of hospitality, the inn welcomes all visitors to enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the truly beautiful location.

Ales from Stoke Lacy and ciders and perries from Much Marcle are served alongside fine wines from Europe and the New World to complement the truly locally sourced food, cooked to perfection by our team of qualified chefs, which includes Andy Link (Herefordshire Young Chef of the Year 2007), Kayleigh Luscott, Shaefn Lawley and our latest apprentice chef Robin Millward.

Accommodation is available and our rooms are all individually furnished and one is individually haunted by the lady from the river. The Hayloft suite overlooks our magical river and opens onto the terrace gardens; The Stable Suite gives onto the car park, perfect for the less mobile and dogs.

On our doorstep nature immediately unfolds. Butterflies and dragonflies, dippers and otters, heron and kingfishers, brown trout and grayling all live as our neighbours. The twice daily bird chorus is as we all remember from our childhoods, varied, sweet and loud. Our collection of circular walks will take you near and far, three to fifteen miles. The most popular takes you back in time to Croft Ambrey, an elaborate Iron Age hill fort, then on to Croft Castle with its 1000 years of history. The most scary takes you to “Slaughterhouse Covert” and “Dead Woman’s Lane”. Stay three days on our transport included package and walk The Mortimer Trail from Ludlow to Kington and be rewarded with some of the most stunning views in the Marches.

From your base at The Riverside Inn, you can comfortably visit five golf courses, many churches, the black and white village trail, Ludlow, Hereford, houses and gardens, heritage sites, breweries, ciderpresses and cheesewrights, visitor centres and even a mountain bike trail.

Or just fish.

The Resaurant:

Imagine a most tender rack of new season Welsh Border lamb. Infuse a sublime combination of wild garlic and honey; the garlic picked from the very riverbank by which you sat and drank your local cider just this evening. Serve it with the freshest of seasonal baby carrots, lightly caramelised to perfection. A lovely puree adds a further freshness of peas. Finish the dish with a subtle mint jus. Present with side servings of savoury potatoes and vegetables of the day.

A typical dish created by our head chef Andrew Link and his team. A wonderful synergy of fine, local ingredients and equally fine imaginative cooking skill applied with passion.

Surround the finished article in a lovely relaxed, informal environment of oak beams, stone, pine tables and a log fire. Service performed with a smile.

Or eat outside at lunchtime by the river. Choose from baguettes to rib-eye steaks, Caesar salads to seafood medleys, lamb tagine to freshly cooked fish in local ale batter with home made tartare sauce and Herefordshire Maris Piper chips

Omnivores, carnivores and vegetarians (welcomed and not treated as a nuisance!) are all catered for in our menu, as are coeliacs and those needing dairy free options.

Our food can be described as truly local country style. At the Riverside we aim to let the abundance of local and British produce speak for itself. Sourcing only the best ingredients, having a respect and care for them, we aim to re-invent classic flavours in a refined modern way.

We are committed to using and supporting produce from our immediate surrounds. Snails from Creden Hill, potatoes from Ross, eggs from next door, longhorn beef from Craven Arms, venison from Ludlow, Berkshire cross Duroc pork from Kingsland, trout from Presteigne are just some of our ingredients. In all, over 40 of the best local suppliers provide the ingredients for our dishes.

To complement this, our own herb and vegetable gardens, the size of 5 allotments, yield the freshest of fresh fruit and vegetables, from garlic to shallots, beetroots to blackcurrants, lettuces to leeks. Over 30 different items. Here we talk about “food yards”, not “food miles”!

Come and see the gardens – they are really there!

Everything is freshly cooked. Soups, chutneys, puddings and ice-creams – all are made by us on the premises, please look at our pudding menu where the traditional and the exotic are both to be found. For those partial to cheese, see our cheese board for interesting local offerings.

We are sure you will taste and see the dedication and enthusiasm of Andy, Kayleigh, Shaefn and Robin our Riverside Chefs, who, incidentally are all Herefordshire or Shropshire raised. Winners of competitions and awards at the Hereford and Ludlow Food festivals, regularly giving demonstrations at local schools and shows, their reputation is deservedly growing in our locality.

We have a good reputation locally for larger groups and family celebrations, our high quality food coupled with Richard’s attention to detail. We can cater for parties from 8 to 42 guests with a bespoke menu.

Enjoy the magic. Richard & Liz, owners for the past 12 years, would love to see you.
